Third Grade Reading Challenge - We are in the full swing of the 3rd Grade Reading Challenge.
Third grade is often considered the moment in a student’s life when she makes the transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn” — a make-or-break period for academic success. Research has shown that 75 percent of students who struggle with reading in third grade never catch up. In fact, those students are four times as likely to drop out of high school.
The Rio Linda Lions are dedicated to the future success of our children. We incent children to read more by hosting a contest where each student who reads a book at their reading level and achieves 80% on the comprehension test gets a raffle ticket. We host fundraisers to earn money to provide a Kindle Fire to raffle off in each of the 9 third-grade class in the Rio Linda/Elverta community.

3 third grade classes at Dry Creek Elementary
2 third grade classes at Westside Elementary and;
1 third grade class at Elverta Elementary
The National Research Council links poor third grade reading skills to future failures: any child who’s not reading fairly well by the end of third grade is unlikely to graduate high school. The Rio Linda Lions does not want that to happen to any of our students.
Rio Linda High School Scholarships have been awarded every year since the begining of the Rio Linda Lions Club. We are celebrating our 62nd year this year. The commitment we have to our students is strong and we demonstrate that strength by working hard to raise funds to show our support to the dedicated students in our high school. Scholarships are open to any senior who demonstrates the following commitement and desire:
Community service beyond faith-based
Good academic standing
Good attendance
Desire to attend a junior college or trade school
We look forward to reviewing the applications. This always confirms the importance of our student commitment and the high quality of students in Rio Linda High School.

We Serve
Adopt a racing duck and watch it win fabulous prizes. The plan is to have as many ducks adopted as possible and dump them into “Dry Creek” at Elkhorn Blvd. We will see which duckies are the fastest, slowest and most creative. This fundraiser is open to other organizations.
